How to lay bricks for beginner
A longer beginner session on how to start laying bricks. Twenty minutes with Stu on the basics, from picking up mortar to getting the first bricks down and level.

Uploaded the same day as the shorter line tutorial, this is the longer, slower beginner session. At twenty minutes it gives Stu room to talk through how to start laying some bricks rather than just show it, so if the shorter video moved too quickly, start here.
The focus is on the very first things a beginner struggles with: how to hold the trowel, how to pick up mortar and spread a bed, how to butter the end of a brick for the perp, how to place a brick and push it down to level without knocking the one next to it, and how to check your work with a level as you go. There’s more talking, more repetition and more explanation of why each thing is done the way it is.
It’s the kind of video to watch once all the way through, then have on your phone beside you while you practise on a few bricks in the garden.
Who this is for: absolute beginners who’ve never held a trowel, DIYers about to try a small wall or repair, and anyone who found the shorter tutorial too fast.
What a homeowner should expect from a good job: even if you never lay a brick yourself, this video shows you what the basics look like when they’re done right. Full mortar beds, filled perps, bricks placed once and left alone, and constant checking with a level. A bricklayer who’s fiddling with every brick after laying it, or leaving perps half-filled, hasn’t got the basics right, and it’ll show in the finished wall.
