Before you choose a bricklayer

Three things worth checking

• Ask to see a wall they built at least a year ago: straight perpends and clean joints last, bodges show.
• Check the mortar mix they plan to use. It should be weaker than the brick; a hard 3:1 mix on soft facing bricks cracks the brick, not the joint.
• Agree who orders the bricks and sand, and that a close match is found for any repair.

Trades rate trades. A plumber's work, rated by other plumbers who spot what you can't. It can't be bought.
